Aside from choosing a Hummingbird Bakery wedding cake (what else?), we share our five top tips to help you find the perfect wedding cake for your celebration.
Florals, frills, piping, stencilling, ribbons, decorations, colours, flavours, frostings – the list goes on!
While oh-so-exciting, choosing your dream wedding cake can leave you with more questions than answers. But don’t worry, we’re here to help you develop your ideal wedding cake design.
Here are our top five pointers to guide you in choosing a truly personal wedding centrepiece:
1. Create a mood board.
Cut out pictures of details from cakes that inspire you and if you see something you like, add it to your board.
Don’t feel limited to pictures of cakes or desserts, you could include anything from fabric swatches, photos, paintings, jewellery, the venue or even somewhere special like a holiday destination.
Bring this to your first consultation and before you know it, your dream cake will begin to take shape and the finished design will be entirely unique to you as a couple.
2. Borrow the best features of different designs.
Your wedding cake consultant will have a host of wedding cake designs to share which you may not have considered or pictured as part of your day.
If you’re stuck for inspiration, imagine how you would prefer to adapt a current design or combine elements from various cakes.
It is by mixing and matching these various details, decorations, colours and flavours that you can begin to custom-make a design that works to your taste.
3. Get a taster with cake samples.
Samples, apart from being a delicious perk of your wedding cake consultation, are a sneak peak at how your finished wedding dessert will taste when served to your guests.
Always insist on tasting the sponges, frostings and fillings that you can expect for your finished cake.
At The Hummingbird Bakery, we are willing to adapt cake recipes taken from our cookbooks.
Aside from classics like vanilla and chocolate, we can bake you a Red Velvet, chocolate fudge, coconut, lemon and raspberry or even a multi-coloured rainbow sponge wedding cake.
It may be possible to have different flavours across different tiers (if you can’t possibly decide!).
4. Consider wedding cupcakes as a take-home treat for guests.
Maybe we’re a little biased being a cupcake bakery n’ all, but there’s no denying an individual cupcake makes a lovely gift to look forward to for your wedding guests.
Arrange your cupcakes in a generous tower and guests can be invited to help themselves as the mood takes.
5. Mix up your wedding cake sizes.
Have a variety of cakes on offer with wedding cake toppers, full-sized wedding cupcakes and mini wedding cupcakes.
Mini cupcakes are sweet goodies for guests who fancy a smaller indulgence and are just the right size for younger children.
This also makes it easy to have a tempting selection of cake flavours on offer.
