Ever since we first flung open the doors to The Hummingbird Bakery on Portobello Road back in 2004 (ahhh, misty-eyed memories!), the folks of London have been enjoying baking as the Americans do.
Wholesome ingredients, freshly baked batters, generous towers of lightly whipped frosting, handfuls of candy coloured sprinkles; when it comes to pinning down what makes US baking different to baking over in the UK, the motto is ‘more is more’!
With 4th July marked on the calendar, The Hummingbird Bakers knew they had to pull something authentically yummy out of the bag to mark Independence Day. As Stateside goodies go, cupcakes are the president, so we took a twist on the classic.
Keeping it simple with our much-loved vanilla cupcake sponge, we thought we’d let our frosting do the talking with a bold red, white and blue theme.
We think these delicious star-spangled goodies stand for everything we love about American baking:
