It has been ten years since The Hummingbird Bakery opened on Portobello Road in Notting Hill, bringing American-style baking to London.
When we opened a decade ago with little more than a few cupcakes and big hopes that our American bakes would catch on in London, we never could have dreamed of the journey that lay ahead.
Now, ten years on from our first batch of cupcakes, we can take a look back and see that we were at the heart of what can only be described as a Brit baking revolution. And for this opportunity, we can’t thank our amazing customers and home bakers enough!
So what have the last ten years held for an American bakery in London? Let’s take look back over these ten wonderful years of baking:
2004: The Hummingbird Bakery opens on Portobello Road, selling 250 cupcakes on its first day.
2004: The cupcake craze takes hold with celebrities spotted indulging their sweet tooth for these American bakes.
2007: The second Hummingbird Bakery opens on Old Brompton Road in South Kensington.
2009: Our first bestselling recipe collection ‘The Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook’ is published, featuring classic American-style cupcakes, layer cakes, brownies, pies and tray bakes.
2009: The Hummingbird Bakery Soho on Wardour Street opens.
2010: For the first time, we sell more than 1 million cupcakes in under 12 months!
2011: Our second book, ‘The Hummingbird Bakery Cake Days’ is published and enters the non-fiction top 10.
2011: We open our first branch in the east of London in Spitalfields on Frying Pan Alley near Liverpool Street.
2012: The Hummingbird Bakery Islington opens in the Angel Building on St. John Street. 2012: Our first international franchised branch is launched in The Dubai Mall, United Arab Emirates.
2013: ‘Home Sweet Home’, our third cookbook is published. Within two weeks it reaches number one in the hardback non-fiction chart.
2013: A second international branch is opened on Citywalk in Dubai.
2014: Our sixth London branch, The Hummingbird Bakery Richmond is opened.
