The Olympic Torch comes to Islington
July 26, 2012
With just one day to go until the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, Islington witnesses the Olympic Torch Relay as it heads right past the newest Hummingbird Bakery store!
London is in the grip of Olympic fever and the buzz has reached our bakery in Islington! Our branch in The Angel Building on St John Street waited as the world-famous relay continued its journey past Islington Town Hall.
For the duration of its relay around the country, the flame will be held aloft by no fewer than 8,000 inspirational Olympic Torchbearers. These are people who have been recognised for their inspirational achievements, each with their own unique story.
Indeed, the Torch itself has 8,000 circles punched into the metal to symbolise each one of the Torchbearers who will have helped it along its route which will end at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford tomorrow on 27th July.
Starting its journey today in Camden, it passed through Islington at around 8am along Upper Street, past the Town Hall, before moving down St John Street where our Hummingbird Bakery Islington branch lives! Little Britain comedian and Britain’s Got Talent judge David Walliams was there at the Town Hall to take the Torch.
Here are some snaps we captured of the Torch as it made its way through Islington:
